Drop Waists at Downton

In Downton's earlier seasons, the women wore corsets underneath their gowns, and said gowns almost always had sleeves. This season, the women of Downton are embracing the styles of the 1920's: which means sleeveless gowns, sequins and lots and lots of drop waists. The 1920's are known for women shedding their ultra-feminine frocks for a more boyish look, with looser (and shorter!) cuts. Here are a few of my picks for a more modern looks featuring a drop waist below. And of course, get a sneak peek of the beautiful fashions for series three in the Chronicles of Downton Abbey, available now!

Gems and Jewels of Downton Abbey

If you know me, you know that I live and breathe Downton Abbey. The show, whose third season premieres on PBS January 6th, has become famous for its clever scripts, heart-wrenching plots, talented cast, and of course, gorgeous fashion. In this upcoming season, we'll see the Crawley family take on a new decade: the 1920's. In anticipation of the upcoming third season, an official companion book, The Chronicles of Downton Abbey, was released this month. Written by Jessica Fellowes, daughter of the show's creator and writer, Julian Fellowes, Chronicles is packed with insider photos, character bios, and hints of what's to come in season three!

My copy of Chronicles had been preordered since October, so when I was contacted about creating Downton inspired style guides for the blog, you can only imagine my excitement. A chance to combine my two favorite things: Downton and fashion! I poured over the pages when I was home over Thanksgiving break, and two accessories kept popping up across the pages: long necklaces, and jeweled headbands or hair pieces. Here are a few of my picks if you're looking to channel your inner Lady Mary just in time for the premiere! If you're too impatient, The Chronicles of Downton Abbey is sure to tide you over in the meantime.

I was not compensated for this post -- I just love Downton Abbey and the Chronicles of Downton Abbey!

Wardrobe Wednesday: Red, White and Vintage

Back at Syracuse after a very relaxing Thanksgiving break. As anxious as I was to get back to school then, now I'm dreading all the work that's hitting me these next two weeks. Bear with me if my posting is sparse -- I'll be a regular at the SU library for the next fourteen days.

Sweater: J.Crew (old) Similar
Necklace: Vintage (Similar)
Pants: NYC Boutique (Similar: Splurge vs. Steal)
Belt: Thrifted
Flip-Flops: Tory Burch
Bangle: Sequin

I'm usually not one to vintage shop a ton -- but I visited the Brooklyn Flea this summer and couldn't believe all the gorgeous pieces. I came super close to picking up a pair of Jimmy Choo's for $60 (granted, they were a little old and run-down. But they're Jimmy Choo's!), but sadly my size 8 feet couldn't squeeze into a 7. Instead, I grabbed this blue cameo necklace - I loved the blue background, different from a typical pink. I'd definitely recommend a visit to the Brooklyn Flea next time you're in NYC - besides just the stands, there's amazing food too!

Girl on a Budget: J.Crew

It's no secret that I am in the midst of a long-lived love affair with J.Crew. The classic-but-still-trendy pieces have a way of making their way into my closet every time I visit a store. But a love affair even greater than this one is mine with the J.Crew sale section. Crawling with great deals, especially when you add on the 15% student discount, it's the perfect place to go to get your favorite essentials without shelving out the big bucks. A few of my favorites right now are below, including the classic ballet flats (obsessed with mine - so versatile), as well as the go-to cafe capri pants. Head over now -- there's an extra 25% off and free shipping on everything in store!

New Documentary in Vogue

Who didn't love the 2009 documentary The September Issue? I'll admit, when it came out I was a senior in high school and drove to a 30 minutes away movie theater on a Tuesday to see it (by myself). The film chronicled the creation of the magazine's legendary September issue, the hallmark yearly issue for fashion magazines everywhere.

This December, we're getting another VOGUE documentary to fawn over, but this time on the small screen. In Vogue: The Editor's Eye focuses on the editors whose vision and imagination manifests itself in the fashion images that make up the pages of the legendary glossy. HBO will premiere the film, which features interviews with legendary VOGUE editors such as Creative Director Grace Coddington (whose memoir is out today!), and fashion icons and VOGUE staples like Sarah Jessica Parker. Thankfully, my family is (finally) getting HBO this month, so it'll be here in time for

Animated Fashion

Growing up outside Chicago, a highlight of the holiday season was heading down to Marshall Field's (sadly now Macy's) on State Street for some holiday window viewing. As such, holiday windows have always held a special place in my Christmas season. As I head down to New York City this weekend to see the Heiress with my Downton Abbey obsessed family (Dan Stevens, one of the show's stars, has a lead role in the cast), I'm looking forward to checking out a new set of holiday windows at Barneys on Madison Avenue.

Steven Meisel and Minnie Mouse
This year, the legendary department store has teamed up with Disney to create windows for their flagship store. The images feature some of your favorite fashion celebs in animated form: Sarah Jessica Parker, Anna Del Russo, Naomi Campbell, Bryanboy and Lady Gaga. Even better, there's a short animated Disney film titled Electric Holiday featuring the 'characters' from the windows playing on repeat inside the store. It's the perfect fusion of childhood and grown-up loves: Disney characters and high fashion. Check it out if you're in NYC this holiday season!

Emmanuelle Alt, Franca Sozzani, Sarah Jessica Parker and Glenda Bailey
Carine Roitfeld, Naomi Campbell and the Cheshire Cat

Comfy Cozy for Fall

We're reaching that point in the semester where I'm in desperate need of a break. Looking extremely forward to next week's Thanksgiving holiday, with plenty of time for relaxation, spending time with friends, and of course, plenty of food. As my time for study abroad draws nearer and nearer, my list of items I'm wishing for only seems to grow and grow. Even on an unseasonably warm day like today, I find myself reaching for fall staples - riding boots, button down shirts, and thick sweaters. What are you craving this Monday?

ONE topshop jacquard trouser
TWO j.crew enamel ring
THREE scotch plaid shirt
FOUR madewell suede archive boot
FIVE j.crew heart cluster necklace
SIX collection cashmere cableknit sweater
SEVEN madewell lovelock clutch in calfhair (on sale!)

Fresh Finds: Vintage Collars

Happy Friday! Collar necklaces have been one of my favorite jewelry trends this year. Half statement necklace, half subdued and elegant outfit addition, they're a perfect way to give a plain top a little something extra. Not to mention I love collars on everything, so these necklaces make that just a bit easier to achieve. I spotted this gorgeous vintage collar necklace and fell immediately in love. The intricate detailing on the gold stenciled pattern makes for a perfect feminine collar. At only $22, I'm tempted to pick it up myself!

Pinterest of the Week: Dawn Del Russo

If you're a fashion lover, then your Pinterest is most likely chock full of beautiful images of clothes, ad campaigns, street style, and runway snaps. Dawn Del Russo, the founder behind Bella Dawn and YouTube fashion expert, has a Pinterest that offers all that and more. With boards dedicated to designers, ad campaigns, TV shows (even award shows!), colors and ways to wear certain styles, you'll never be lacking fashion inspiration when pinning from her boards.

A few of my favorite boards include those dedicated to Glitter, Hermes, an extensive collection of fashion Editorials and last year's Oscars (a wonderful year with a Meryl win!). There's a few boards that aren't style related, but for the most part, this pinner is one for the fashion lovers. Check out my favorite pins below:

Wardrobe Wednesday: Hot Pink

I'm usually not one to shop in the kids department. Although I do think the boys section can be a great place to find inexpensive blazers, and I've tried to squeeze into an XL Girls top or dress from time to time, I'm usually drawn to a more mature look. But in a J.Crew over the summer, I spotted this neon pink and pearl necklace in the Crewcuts section and immediately knew I had to have it - and at the price of only $18.50!

 TOP: H&M
NECKLACE: J.Crew Crewcuts
SKIRT: Urban Outfitters (Old)
SHOES: J.Crew

I threw it on with a few of my favorite basics - sleeveless white button down, bright pink skirt and ballet flats (I just want a pair in every color). Plenty of pink and an under $20 J.Crew necklace to boot!

Longing for the days of bare legs as I break out my long parka this week!

Russian Garb

I've posted about the upcoming Anna Karenina adaptation (with a cast I could not be more excited for: Keira Knightley, Jude Law and Downton Abbey's Michelle Dockery!) a few times, and one thing I've been almost anticipating almost as eagerly as the film's release (just a few weeks!) is the Anna Karenina inspired line at Banana Republic.

The collection is packed with clothing and accessories filled with 19th century Russia inspired looks - lots of fur, darks colors and glitzy jewels, all with a modern twist - nothing as elaborate as the looks you're bound to see in the film (if only). With winter chills coming on, it seems just the time to pick up a faux fur vest or snood..

Zigs and Zags

For a long while to me, chevron was simply a gas station, or my go-to pattern when making string friendship bracelets (the number of which I made - and wore at the same time will stay an embarrassing secret). Lately, the zig zag pattern has been popping up everywhere from fashion to home decor. Here are a few of my favorite pieces I've seen featuring the funky print.

ONE BaubleBar Rings
TWO Anthropologie Wedges
THREE BaubleBar Bangle
FOUR iPhone Case
FIVE Madewell Sweater
