Spice Up Your Life (Again)

Coming off of the Anastasia musical news a few days ago, there's even more musical news (and it's not  just that I officially have tickets to see Phantom of the Opera live for the 9th time...) - everyone's favorite 90's girl group, the Spice Girls, is set to debut their own musical, Viva Forever (the same as a song from their Spiceworld album). The musical will incorporate the Spice Girls' classic 'girl power' hits and the creative team will led by Mamma Mia creator Judy Craymer as producer and Absolutely Famous's Jennifer Saunders writing the book. If anyone can take dance hits and turn them into a successful musical, it's these two. I'm not ashamed to admit that I still listen to my Spice Girls album every once in a while (okay, maybe more than that...and maybe I'm a little bit ashamed), so I clearly cannot wait for this musical. Hopefully it will be London by Spring 2013 for my semester abroad!

Here's a video of the girls discussing the musical...and Posh looking angry.

New FNO 2012 Merchandise Design Released

One of the most whirlwind experiences of my life was attending Fashion's Night Out in September of my freshman year of college. A spur of the moment, night before decision, combined with a 20 hour NYC excursion jampacked with celebrity sightings, shopping, and of course, good food made for one of the most memorable experiences of my college career thus far (and it was only the third week!) For those of you who don't know, Fashion's Night Out was started by VOGUE EIC Anna Wintour to boost 'shopping morale' in these hard economic times with sales, late hours at stores, celebrity appearances, and more: basically one big party for the shopping world (and a kick off to Fashion Week).

Last year's Thursday night Fashion's Night Out (FNO) prevented me from attending (what are the chances that the year they have the event on a Thursday is the only semester thus far in college that I've had Friday classes?) but I'm hoping to make it down this year, not only just for the event, but to be back in New York again for a few days (I'm dreading leaving already and I still have 7 weeks to go), although it is on another Thursday this year. Despite FNO not being for another couple of months, the preparations are already underway. Today on one of my favorite blogs, Fashion Foie Gras, I saw photos of the new FNO T-Shirt designs. I love the incorporation of color and the VOGUE label into the shirt - something that's never been done before. This year's shirts were designed by Jonathan Saunders and the design is printed on a cotton Gap tee. The proceeds go to the domestic violence charity Refuge. Here's a sneak peek below:

Anna Karenina Trailer

If you haven't guessed by now, then I'll tell you: I'm a huge fan of period pieces. Whenever movies, or even TV shows (Downton Abbey, anyone?) take place in another time, it's an instant attraction for me to watch. As such, one of my favorite screen stars is Keira Knightley, period piece actress extraordinaire. Think of all her famous movies - Pride and Prejudice (one of my personal favorites), Atonement, Pirates of the Caribbean, last fall's A Dangerous Method - they're all period films. She's got another one on the way, set for release early this winter: Anna Karenina, obviously a film adaptation of the classic Russian novel by Leo Tolstoy. While I must admit that I've never read Anna Karenina (the fact that Tolstoy also penned War and Peace is a little off-putting), it's on my reading list for the summer - and especially before the movie comes out (free classics on Kindle!). As an added bonus, Michelle Dockery, who plays Lady Mary in Downton Abbey is also in the  movie - two of my female acting favorites for the price of one! The trailer was just released a few days ago, enjoy!

Anastasia is Coming to Broadway!

If you are a girl born in the late 80's or early 90's, you were the prime age for the release of the animated film Anastasia. This FOX (anyone who is a true Anastasia fan knows that this is NOT a Disney flick) movie spurred a Russian monarchy obsession in many 4-8 year old girls, but few lasted as far as mine - I spent my sophomore year of high school spring break trip to France reading Romanov biographies every free moment I had and I've had a cutout of Bartok on my college bulletin board. Vulture recently informed me that the movie will be coming to the stage sometime in the future (no word yet on the timing).

However, Angela Lansbury will be reprising her role as the Dowager Empress in the show. An original cast member who is also a Broadway veteran? Bodes well for the show, which will incorporate an overwhelming 15 new songs in addition to 5 from the original. (Although, according to the count on my iTunes, there are six songs from the original - which is getting the cut?) I have to admit, I'm probably most excited to see Bartok, my favorite animated bat, brought to life. Check out Imagine Casting's ideas for the prime cast. I'm loving the thought of Sierra Boggess, Brian D'Arcy James and Aaron Tveit (perfect choice for the hottest cartoon character of all time).

(Also, this was my 100th post! Can't believe I've made it this far!)

Pinterest of the Week

I know, I know -- I've been slacking on my Pinterest of the Week. Blame New York - there's too much to do and see to spend too much time with my computer. I've been slacking on my pinning as well - my followers are probably thankful I've been clogging their feeds less and less. A recent trip to the Met reminded me of my love of art, in all different forms and from all different eras. One of my favorite art pinners is Francoise Barnes - whose brief description reads "Artist, runner." He has extensive boards on both general art and patterns, titled PATTERNS-LINES-SHAPES-TEXTURES, and ART-PAINTING-PRINTS-ENCAUSTIC-PLASTER, respectively. His other boards focus on a variety of artistic subjects and beyond, my favorites being 3D, JOURNALS/SKETCHBOOKS/ALTERED BOOKS and of course, FRANCE, Mon Beau Pays. There's even a board dedicated to his own artwork!

The Brightest Shade of All

Yellow has been one of my favorite colors ever since June 2008, following my sophomore year of high school. I visited New York with my mom and my cousin, and we were shopping in the village and we stopped at this small boutique, Purdy Girl (cheesy name, great clothes). I found this yellow Nanette Lepore dress I absolutely fell in love with. By some stroke of luck or magic, not entirely sure which, despite the hefty price tag, I walked out of the store with the dress. Ever since purchasing that garment, yellow has been one of my favorite colors. And now that it's summer, there's even more of a reason to wear it! Sheer blouses, statement earrings, basic flats, crossbody bags and flowing skirts are just a few of my favorite ways to break out this bright color.

Life According to Instagram

I've been a bad blogger, I know. Life has just gotten so incredibly busy. From working 9:30-5:30 everyday at my internship and trying to soak up as much of New York as I can in my free time, I've rarely had a moment to sit in front of my computer perusing the web for inspiration. Here are a few instagramed shots from my first week in the city!

CFDA Awards!

I have officially relocated: I moved into my dorm yesterday, and today I started my first day at my internship! After work, I headed to Lincoln Center to watch the red carpet arrivals at the CFDA (Council of American Fashion Designers) Awards. It was absolutely the most perfect way to start off my summer. I'm a sucker for fashion and celebrity spottings, especially in a red carpet format, so this was the perfect fusion of the two. I originally went to see Dan Stevens, who plays Matthew Crawley on Downton Abbey, but he either didn't make an appearance or his arrival was blocked by a bus (if there was really only a bus separating me from seeing Matthew Crawley, I think I'll cry). From getting a glimpse of the legend herself Anna Wintour to taking a picture with Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain (officially one of my new favorite female celebrities, she left the red carpet, came out to the sidewalk to greet all the fans, so incredibly sweet), it's definitely not a night I'll be forgetting anytime soon! I took a lot of photos, but most of them aren't superb (blame my excitement and shaky hands, after I saw Anna my heart didn't stop racing for 30 minutes), but here's a few favorites below.

Summer Relocation!

I've dreamed of living and working in New York City since before I can remember. A hub for fashion, theater, food, culture, film and much more, NYC has always been one of my favorite places to visit, and now, I'm going to be living there for the next 10 weeks. While I'm living in NYC, I will be working a 5-day a week, 9:30-5:30 internship at a popular women's lifestyle magazine, which like living in NYC, is something that I've been dreaming of for a long while. I move in tomorrow, and I'm so excited to be able to live in this city that I've only ever visited as a tourist.

Fresh Finds: Pencil Skirt

My life is currently a whirlwind of packing, saying goodbyes, and doing things (like getting my haircut for the first time since August) that should have been done quite some time ago. I've been doing a little last minute internship shopping, finding even more wardrobe staples that I can't imagine making it through this summer without. One of these is a pencil skirt. I recently picked one up in a khaki shade, but there's a lot more exciting options in terms of hue. I love this one on the J.Crew factory website (which is, let's face it, the best part about the weekends). My favorite color has to be the bright red they've dubbed 'poppy', but the purple, pink and white are all up there as well. Pick one up for the discounted price of $50 here.
